We will lead the transformation of community centered care and services.
Early in 1978, a group of concerned citizens in Society Hill, South Carolina met to discuss the need for health care in their community. Society Hill is a small rural town, population 4800, located along the Pee Dee River at the meeting points of Darlington, Chesterfield and Marlboro Counties. The Society Hill Family Health Clinic received its charter on April 5, 1978 and became operational April 1, 1980.
During the past two decades, the Society Hill Family Health Clinic has grown to become a national model of health care delivery in rural communities. Now called CareSouth Carolina, the private non-profit community owned business operates nine medical centers in seven communities in the Pee Dee region: Bennettsville, Bishopville, Cheraw, Hartsville, Lake View, McColl, Chesterfield, and Society Hill. In 1991, CareSouth Carolina became the only community health center in the nation to be designated in Area Agency on Aging - Vantage Point. Plus, in 2001, CareSouth Carolina began its Care INNOVATIONS division, delivering comprehensive HIV/AIDS primary health care services to residents of Chesterfield, Darlington, Lee and Marlboro Counties.
CareSouth Carolina has grown from a small, $200,000 a year, one-physician office operation to the regional health and human services alliance of the present. In December of 1980, the complete staff included an administrator (Ann Lewis, current CEO), a part-time bookkeeper, a medical receptionist, a nurse and a physician. They saw 24 patients on that first day in Society Hill. Now, CareSouth Carolina has over 280 employees, serves over 35,000 patients a year, and has an annual operating revenue over $20 million. Plus, Vantage Point, a division of CareSouth Carolina, currently contracts with over ten local area providers to deliver services to over 6,000 elderly clients in the Pee Dee region.
Despite its growth, CareSouth Carolina has stayed the course and a step ahead of those forces that continue to alter the landscape of the health care field. It has never shied away from its responsibility to the underserved, and its visionary clinical programs have received national exposure and recognition from national legislators as well as the CBS Evening News, the ABC Today Show, Time Magazine, the Institute of Health Care Improvement, the Wall Street Journal, and others. In 2000, CareSouth Carolina joined only 15 ambulatory care facilities in South Carolina and became the only ambulatory care center in the Pee Dee region to have earned accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. More importantly, CareSouth Carolina has remained true to its community-based approach to health care and transformed the health of its clients for the better.
