The Sights and Sounds from NACHC P&I

The cherry blossoms weren't the only thing shining brightly in our nation's capital during the last week of March. Passion for health centers was in full bloom as around 70 people from South Carolina's health centers ascended Capitol Hill for NACHC P&I. Overall, 19 health centers from across the state were represented in this vitally important conference. Given the immense political uncertainties surrounding health care this year, the urgency of reaching our Congressmen and Senators was at a crescendo. Our team of health center advocates were prepared for the challenge with sharp messaging that was equally matched by sharp wardrobes. Here's some highlights from NACHC P&I:

  • Sue Veer, CEO of Carolina Health Centers, won the NACHC Advocacy MVP Award! This completes a P&I sweep for Sue as she won the Community Health Center Advocate Award at State P&I in February. Congratulations!
  • Dr. Faith Polkey, Chief of Pediatrics at Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, won the NACHC & AT Still Juan Carlos Olivares Hometown Scholar Advocate of the Year Award!
  • We visited all eight of our current Congressional Delegation members. Sen. Lindsey Graham spoke to a packed room which cheered as he discussed his support for health centers.
  • Three of our House member signed the Dear Colleague Letter this year. Many thanks to Congressman Jim Clyburn, Congressman Joe Wilson and Congressman Tom Rice for signing on to publicly state their support for our cause.
  • Yvonne Davis, consumer board member from Health Care Partners of SC, served on a panel featuring former Sen. Tom Daschle and former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt during the opening general session. Davis serves on NACHC's Executive Committee.

The SCPHCA would like to thank everyone who took time away from their families and health centers to attend NACHC P&I. Advocacy and health centers are symbiotic. Without dedicated advocates, we wouldn't have the political and financial support necessary to serve more than 364,000 patients. Our presence during NACHC P&I shores up support and educates our delegation about the essential work of South Carolina's health centers. Advocacy is a year round endeavor. Keep it going by contacting your Congressman now to express your support for health centers here.
