Francis Marion Announces Yvonne Davis Scholarship

Community health center advocate Yvonne Davis thought she was simply going to be part of the crowd during Francis Marion University's African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition's (AAFSC) annual gala on Thursday, March 1. That wasn't exactly the case as it turns out. She was in the audience when Francis Marion President Dr. Fred Carter announced the University would endow a scholarship in her name.

Needless to say, this unexpected but great news caught Davis off guard.

"I never, ever thought that would happen. I'm speechless and overwhelmed. It's a good thing somebody can reap the benefits of something I've done. That's what really delights me," said Davis.

The scholarship will benefit a Francis Marion student who displays a passion for community service and health sciences.

The announcement of the scholarship was particularly special because Davis served as a librarian at Francis Marion for 34 years, retiring as library manager. 17 years ago, she was one of the founding members of the AAFSC, which seeks to provide support for Francis Marion's African-American student population.

Aside from being an advocate for students, Davis is also a staunch advocate for CHCs across the nation, especially the Pee Dee region. She was instrumental in bringing a HopeHealth site to the campus of Francis Marion. Davis is a patient of Health Care Partners of South Carolina (HCPSC) in Marion, where she resides. Davis is the vice chair of the HCPSC board. Davis' advocacy efforts extend far beyond the Palmetto State as she is the consumer board representative for the National Association of Community Health Center's (NACHC) Executive Committee.

Davis says she hopes the scholarship will continue her legacy of community involvement for health care.

"I still can't believe it, but it happened," said Davis of the scholarship.
