In February, around 100 community health center leaders and advocates gathered in Columbia to receive valuable knowledge through panels/presentations and talk directly with their state lawmakers during the 2019 State Policies and Issues Forum. This annual event has now been held for 14 consecutive years. It provides attendees with the chance to network their peers while learning about the latest policies impact health centers.
This year's Forum centered on the various issues outlined in the PCA's Legislative Agenda. On Day One, the audience took in sessions on expanding services by covered state Medicaid; the opioid crisis; broadband, telehealth and interoperability; and workforce. Then, the group splintered off to the Statehouse to advocate for their health centers. The next day, special guest Jennifer Taylor, Director of Federal Affairs at NACHC, and Lee Tant, PCA Public Affairs Coordinator, gave the group an update on the federal funding cliff situation.
Toward the end of that presentation, the audience received an unexpected but welcome surprise - an appearance by U.S. House Majority Whip James Clyburn. Rep. Clyburn discussed why access to health care and, thus, community health centers are so important to him. The Forum concluded with an informative session on merging marketing and data featuring Schipp Ames, Vice President of the SC Hospital Association, and Cayci Bank, Director of Communications for 1000 Feathers. Thanks to everyone who came out to support this worthwhile advocacy event!
